From the 8mm silent films of Lee Avis, shot between Philadelphia and Cape May, and around Atlantic City in the 1950s. This rare footage was edited and professionally transferred to DVD by Main Line Motion Pictures. Features passenger trains, freight trains and some shop and switching footage - including a 0-8-0 tank engine "Reading Locomotive Works Shop Switcher". 

Vignettes of the Pennsylvania Railroad Volume 2
Featuring the color and black&white photography of veteran railfans Charlie Bealer, CHarles W. Houser Sr., and Bruce Kantner. Released in 2005 by Clear Block Productions, this DVD is 53 minutes with narration (can be turned off). Covers the 'P' Company in its namesake state from the years 1952-1967.

Here's an interesting item: a New York Central Railroad Company Record of Arrival Notice book from 1957.

I really don't have much information on it except there are hundreds of waybills "For Charges on Articles Transported."

145 Official Railway Equipment Registers for sale (1924 through 1999)

For sale: 145 Official Railway Equipment Registers spanning the decades starting with January 1924. They are of various conditions (mostly good, but some covers in poor condition given their vintage) and there are several duplicates in the later years (see photos of lists).

 



This is a Moving Sale — these books must be picked up between Sunday, June 17 and Friday, June 22. They are located in St. Thomas, Ont.

I will part with them all for $5,000 (about $35 each) or best offer.

If you can't live in a train car, build one inside your home

How far do you take your hobby? Railfans are a dedicated bunch, but it would be hard to find anyone as dedicated to their hobby as Twitter user @igaigaadjmadjml who turned a room in his house into the interior of a rail car.

The tetsudo fan (Japanese translation of the term “railfan”) community in Japan is known for its obsession with everything related to trains. Some members travel all over the country snapping photos of as many train models as they can, attending ceremonial events where old train cars are commissioned out of service and trying to get their hands on collectible memorabilia. But some tetsudo fans go even further. Like Twitter user @igaigaadjmadjml, a train enthusiast whose entire social media page consists of train-related photos and message. He recently decided he shouldn’t have to travel to a train station to be in a train car, so he converted one of the rooms in his house into a life size-replica of a Japanese train car.

Where to get free boxes for moving or packing

Need cardboard boxes for moving or storage?

Let me rephrase that. Do you need free cardboard boxes?

If you live in Canada, you're in luck. I just recently discovered your local Dollarama is giving them away. 

If you go to one of the stores in the first hour or two after opening when they are stocking shelves and ask politely, you are likely to receive as many boxes as you can carry.

Good quality boxes, too. Not flimsy, cheap cardboard.

Yes, it's an off-topic post, but it's good free advice.

Collecting Railroad Items, Rare Or Not, Is Right On Track: Chicago Tribune

Here is a very interesting story from 1985 that was published in the Chicago Tribune:

Collectors of railroad or train memorabilia are constantly trying to track down items that interest them. Their interest ranges from tickets to timetables to dishes.

Some collectors specialize in a particular item such as railroad lanterns or switch locks. Others collect items relating to a particular railway company, and still others (referred to as ``railroadiana roadies``) want anything and everything that`s railway-connected.

... Sleeping car wool blankets marked with a railroad`s name or logo are worth $65 to $150. Hand towels may be worth $10 to $25, pillowcases $4 to $10 each, headrest covers, $6 to about $12, and sheets, $10 up.

Trainmen`s caps with metal badges intact are valued from $35 to $175. Cap badges, minus the caps, have various values, and examples can be found, along with other types of railroad-related memorabilia, in ``Railroad Collectibles --Third Revised Edition,`` by Stanley L. Baker.

The beautiful and hard to find New Mexico Moon puzzle, featuring the artwork of John Winfield, measures 20" x 27" when completed. 

The equally beautiful Blue Bonnets and War Bonnets, featuring the artwork of Robert West, measures 19" x 30".

Both of these collectible puzzles are produced by SunsOut Inc. and are new, still in shrink wrap.

Official Register of Passenger Train Equipment Number 1 (March 1943).

Very rare.

I have a copy of the original Number 1 (March 1943). Very rare. Very good condition, no writing or creases.

Also selling numbers 21 (Jan 1956), 29 (March 1964 ) and 35 (March 1970). All are in very good condition.

These unique volumes were published in New York by the Railway Equipment and Publication Co. It was no longer published after Amtrak was created in 1971.
